My Evinrude outboard will not start. It cranks but will not fire up. I know nothing about boat engines, and I don’t know why it will not turn on and begin to run. I’ve done some online research and my readings suggest changing the spark plug.
Exactly what is a spark plug and what is the recommended spark plug brand, size and correct gap settings?
A spark plug is a device that ignites the fuel in an internal combustion engine by generating an electric spark. It consists of a central electrode that is surrounded by a ceramic insulator and encased in a metal shell. The spark plug is connected to a high-voltage ignition system, which sends an electrical current through the electrode to create a spark. This spark ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine’s combustion chamber, causing the engine to run.
Use the factory recommended spark plug for your Evinrude outboard motor. The correct spark plug is a Champion QC10WEP @ 0.028 ± 0.003 in. (0.71 mm). When installing the spark plug tighten to a torque of 15 ft. lbs.
Be sure to index spark plugs.
What do you mean by index spark plug?
Spark plug indexing is the process of adjusting the angle of the spark plug electrode in relation to the combustion chamber to optimize the spark location and improve the engine’s performance. This is typically done by rotating the spark plug and using a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the electrode and the cylinder head. The indexing angle is then adjusted to ensure that the spark occurs at the most effective location for igniting the air/fuel mixture. This can help improve the engine’s power output, fuel efficiency, and overall performance.
I’ve included the procedures for indexing spark plugs for your exact model. See image.
